Day 11 of 135

Day 11: Lolo's Speech in the Group Chat

At his house in Cainta, Rizal, Lolo Tomas (A), a retired school principal, asks his grandson Mark (B) why the cousins laughed at the thank-you he posted in the family group chat for their birthday greetings.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Mark, why did your cousins answer my thank-you with nothing but "HAHAHA"?

  2. B

Lo, read what you wrote: "My dear grandchildren, I am deeply gladdened by your kind greetings." It sounds like a graduation speech.

  3. A

At ano ang masama roon? Ganyan sumulat ang isang ginoo, may bantas at may paggalang.

And what is wrong with that? That is how a gentleman writes, with punctuation and with respect.

  4. B

Nothing's wrong with it, but in the GC people keep it short, like Bea's: "hbd lolo, sana all, wish everyone had a lolo like you."

  5. A

Sige, gagayahin ko: "salamat mga apo, sana all." Ayan, naipadala ko na.

Fine, I shall copy that: "thanks grandkids, sana all." There, I have sent it.

  6. B

Lo, "sana all" is for when you're jealous, so now you sound jealous of your own birthday!

  7. A

And now, "HAHAHA" again. In that case, I am not the one who ought to be learning your language.

  8. B

E sino po ang mag-aaral, Lo?

Then who should be learning, Lo?

  9. A

Kayong magpipinsan. Sa Linggo, susulatan ninyo ako ng tunay na liham, may bantas at malaking titik.

All you cousins. On Sunday, each of you will write me a proper letter, with punctuation and capital letters.
