Day 116: A Caregiver for Papa
At the family house in San Pablo, Laguna, a month after his fall, siblings Ariel (B), Norma (C) and Oscar (D) come to tell their father, Leoncio (A), eighty-one and proud, that they have hired a live-in caregiver for him.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Well, all three of you, and it isn't even Christmas. Who died, or am I what we're here to discuss?
-
B
You, Pa, but it's nothing bad. Starting Monday, you'll have a live-in caregiver, Jessa, from Nagcarlan.
-
C
Pa, we're not abandoning you, that's why you'll have someone with you. We're just worried.
-
A
Oh, thank you, so I've got a nanny now, at eighty-one. What's next, a baby walker and a bib?
-
D
Pa, a caregiver, not a nanny. She's TESDA-certified, NC II, and she knows first aid.
-
A
TESDA?
TESDA? So she's had more training in looking after people than the three of you put together.
-
B
I told you guys, explaining won't get us anywhere. Norma, you do it, you're the favorite.
-
C
Pa, we were scared. You lay on the floor for two hours before Mang Ernie found you.
-
A
Huwag ninyo akong kaawaan.
Two hours of rest, and I even found my missing glasses under the bed. Don't you pity me.
-
D
It's not pity, Pa. All three of us are in Manila, and we just want someone with you every night.
-
A
Kung gayon, isang tanong lang. Kapag may kasama na ako gabi-gabi, may dahilan pa ba kayong umuwi?
Then just one question. Once I have someone with me every night, will you still have a reason to come home?
