Day 125 of 135

Day 125: Disqualified by an Old Blog

At the office of a national literary contest in Makati, Franco (A), a young poet whose collection the judges chose for first prize, comes in at the request of Flor (B), head of the contest secretariat.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Magandang hapon po, Ma'am Flor. Tungkol po ba ito sa awarding? Bumili na po ako ng barong.

Good afternoon, Ma'am Flor. Is this about the awards night? I've already bought a barong.

  2. B

Have a seat, Franco. We thought about this very carefully, and it's hard for me too.

  3. A

What happened, Ma'am? Is something wrong with my papers?

  4. B

Someone sent us a link to your old blog. Six of your ten poems are on it, and the rules ask for "unpublished" work.

  5. A

My blog from high school? But only eleven people ever read it, and seven of them were my classmates.

  6. B

What counts isn't how many read it, but whether it was out in public. The board has decided to disqualify you.

  7. A

I'll delete it right now, Ma'am, it's one click. As if it never happened.

  8. B

Walang nabubura online, Franco, kahit tula.

You deleted it back in 2016, but it's still in an internet archive. Nothing gets erased online, Franco, not even a poem.

  9. A

Kung ganoon po, sino po ang nagpadala? Isa po ba sa labing-isa?

Then who sent it? One of the eleven?

  10. B

I can't say. But the judges agreed unanimously that your collection was the best, and they put that in the minutes.

  11. A

Thank you, Ma'am. If I'm "published" after all, I'll put that in my bio.
