Day 22 of 135

Day 22: Two Diaries, Thirty Years Apart

Packing up the family house in San Juan before it is sold, Daisy (A) finds the diary her mother, Iday (B), kept in 1965, just as Iday finds the one Daisy kept in 1995.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Mom, look what I found in the wardrobe, your diary from 1965!

  2. B

Give me that, you're impossible! And what's this one, covered in Eraserheads stickers, 1995?

  3. A

Let's trade, then: "I was sorely grieved when Celso did not call upon me last night, and the sampaguita I had readied withered."

  4. B

Huwag kang tumawa, ganyan kami magsulat noon. O, heto ang sa iyo: "Super bad trip, hindi nag-page si Jeric, as in wala!"

Don't you laugh, that's how we wrote back then. And here's yours: "Total bummer, Jeric didn't page me, as in, nothing!"

  5. A

So your heartache ran that deep, Mom. There's more: "All night long I kept watch at the window."

  6. B

Wait, there's one like it here too: "All night I sat by the phone, in case he might still call."

  7. A

Mom, how old were you when you wrote that?

  8. B

Disisiyete.

Seventeen. The same age you were, it turns out, when you waited by that phone.

  9. A

If I'd only known back then, Mom, I would've cried to you, not to a diary.

  10. B

And I to you, sweetheart. Let's put these two in the same box.
