Day 49: Lolo Plans His Own Memorial
At his house in Muntinlupa, Lolo Lorenzo (D), eighty, has invited Cherry (B), a memorial plan agent, to help him choose his own resting place; his grandson Andre (A) lets her in, and his daughter Hazel (C), Andre's mother, tries not to look upset.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Pasok po kayo, Ma'am Cherry. Kanina pa po naghihintay si Lolo.
Come in, Ma'am Cherry. Lolo's been waiting for you.
-
B
Good afternoon, Sir Lorenzo. The lawn lot already includes the interment fee and perpetual care.
-
C
Dad, let's not do this today. Maybe next month...
-
D
Now, while I'm still the one holding the calculator. Young lady, perpetual care? Who's going to look after it for all eternity?
-
B
There's a trust fund, so the lot is looked after even when we're all gone. We also have niches in the columbarium.
-
D
Niche, kahon sa pader. Ano ang design life niyan?
A niche, a box in a wall. What's its design life? And a grave, is it for the dead or for the visitors?
-
C
Para sa amin po, Pa. Gusto ko pong may mapupuntahan kami tuwing Undas.
It's for us, Dad. I want a place we can visit every All Saints' Day.
-
A
Me, Lolo, I don't need a headstone. Every time I cross your bridge, you're the one I think of.
-
C
Anak, tulay 'yon, hindi lolo. Hindi mo matitirikan ng kandila ang tulay.
Son, that's a bridge, not your grandfather. You can't light candles on a bridge.
-
B
This kind of conversation is normal. With pre-need, it's the plan holder who decides.
-
D
Then Hazel gets the lawn lot, for the candles on All Saints' Day. Andre gets the bridge; my taxes already paid for it.
