Day 60 of 135

Day 60: Subtitling Eighties Slang for Gen Z

In a film archive's restoration lab in Quezon City, Uriel (A), a young subtitler, plays back the English subtitles he wrote for a restored 1980s comedy while Nelson (B), the archivist who grew up on films like it, watches.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Sir Nelson, nasa 01:12:40 na po tayo, 'yung eksena sa sari-sari store.

Sir Nelson, we're at 01:12:40, the scene at the sari-sari store.

  2. B

I-pause mo. "Wa epek sa erpat ko ang drama mo, 'tol," naging "Bestie, your drama is not giving"?

Pause it. "Your drama won't work on my old man, bro" turned into "Bestie, your drama is not giving"?

  3. A

Opo, ang tito po kasi ng "pal." Same vibe lang ang "bestie" at "'tol," no cap.

Yes, because "pal" sounds like something an uncle would say. "Bestie" and "'tol" have the same vibe, no cap.

  4. B

Anong "no cap"? Walang nakasumbrero sa eksena. 1987 ang pelikula, kaya 1987 din dapat ang tunog.

What "no cap"? Nobody in the scene is wearing a cap. The film is from 1987, so it should sound like 1987 too.

  5. A

"No joke" po 'yon. Pero gets ko na po: "My old man's not buying it, bro"?

It means "no joke." But I get it now: "My old man's not buying it, bro"?

  6. B

Astig, may erpat na. Pero mula reel two, palala nang palala ang delay mo.

Cool, now there's an old man in it. But from reel two on, your delay keeps getting worse.

  7. A

Hala, nagde-drift nga po. Naka-23.976 po pala ang project ko, e native 24 ang scan ninyo.

Oh no, it really is drifting. Turns out my project's set to 23.976, but your scan is native 24.

  8. B

Galing kasi 'yan sa original negative, hindi sa tape ng TV. I-retime mo lahat.

That's because it came from the original negative, not a TV tape. Retime all of it.

  9. A

Copy po. Last na po: 'yung "Dehins ako praning," puwede po bang "I'm not delulu"?

Copy. Last one: for "I ain't paranoid," can I put "I'm not delulu"?

  10. B

Dehins puwede, 'tol. Hindi tinatablan ng "delulu" mo ang 1987, 'yan ang tunay na wa epek.

No can do, bro. Your "delulu" doesn't work on 1987, that's what "wa epek" really means.
