Day 67: Does Utang na Loob Expire?
On the porch of his house in Meycauayan, Bulacan, Tito Cris (A), who paid for his niece's nursing studies, asks Georgina (B), home on leave from her job in Dubai, for a favor.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Georgina, while you're here, there's something I'd like to ask. Could you sponsor Jerome over there in Dubai?
-
B
Tito, I owe you a lot, but it's employers who sponsor work visas.
-
A
Then a visit visa first. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't be in Dubai now.
-
B
Oh, that's right, I forgot utang na loob comes with a receipt. How many installments are left?
-
A
Huwag mo akong pilosopohin.
Don't get smart with me. Utang na loob can't be paid off; you carry it your whole life.
-
B
If the payments last a lifetime, then it was a loan, not help.
-
A
Is this how you young people are now? Whoever doesn't look back at where they came from will never get where they're going.
-
B
I do look back, Tito, that's why I send money every month. But I won't put Jerome in danger.
-
A
Ipapahamak? Tutulungan mo lang naman siyang makarating doon.
Danger? You'd only be helping him get there.
-
B
Every week I see Filipinos stranded there on visit visas. If you want, I'll refer him to our hospital's HR myself.
-
A
...Ganoon pala.
...I see. All right, but I'm writing down that referral too, so you'll have a receipt from me as well.
