Day 123 of 185

Day 123: Named After Which Lola?

A month before their first baby is due, Jaime (A) and his wife Joan (B) find out that both of the baby's grandmothers expect the girl to be named after them.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

  1. A

Hon, tumawag si Mama. "Remedios" daw ang ipapangalan natin sa baby, gaya niya.

Hon, Mom called. She says we're naming the baby "Remedios," after her.

  2. B

Ha? Nagpaburda na si Nanay ng "Corazon" sa mga lampin!

What? My mom already had "Corazon" embroidered on the cloth diapers!

  3. A

Sa pagpapangalan pa lang, may magtatampo na. 'Yung ibang suggestion, may maganda ba?

Just naming her, and someone's already going to feel slighted. Are any of the other suggestions any good?

  4. B

"Princess" kay Tita Pinky, "Jaijo" kay Kuya, galing daw sa Jaime at Joan.

"Princess" from Tita Pinky, and "Jaijo" from Kuya, from Jaime and Joan, he says.

  5. A

E 'yung pagsasama ng dalawang pangalan, puwede kaya? "Remcor"?

What about combining the two names? "Remcor"?

  6. B

Parang pangalan ng hardware 'yan. Pero sandali, Maria Remedios at Maria Corazon sila, 'di ba?

That sounds like a hardware store. But wait, they're Maria Remedios and Maria Corazon, aren't they?

  7. A

E 'di "Maria" na lang, walang talo!

Then just "Maria," and nobody loses!
