Day 56 of 185

Day 56: The Anthem That Went Viral

On the bench outside a corner store in San Andres, Manila, Reggie (A), a security guard with a big voice, asks his kumpare Ruben (B) why everyone keeps smiling at him.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Pare, bakit ba ngiti nang ngiti sa akin ang mga tao ngayon?

Pare, why does everyone keep smiling at me today?

  2. B

Hindi mo pa alam? Two million views na ang pagkanta mo ng Lupang Hinirang sa liga!

You don't know yet? The video of you singing the national anthem at the league has two million views!

  3. A

Sino ang nag-upload niyan? Ipabura mo nga, nakakahiya.

Who uploaded that? Get it taken down, it's embarrassing.

  4. B

Nakakahiya? Pati ang pagbirit mo sa dulo, pinag-uusapan sa buong barangay.

Embarrassing? Even the way you belted out the last note is the talk of the barangay.

  5. A

'Yan nga ang ayoko. Guwardiya ako, hindi singer.

    That's exactly what I don't want. I'm a security guard, not a singer.

  6. B

Sayang. May nag-message pa naman, iniimbitahan kang kumanta ng anthem sa PBA.

Too bad. Someone even messaged, inviting you to sing the anthem at a PBA game.

  7. A

Sa PBA? Teka, huwag mo munang ipabura.

At the PBA? Wait, don't take it down yet.
