Day 264 of 265

Day 264: The Night the River Rose

Just home in Marikina after months at sea, Bernie (B), a seaman, finds his street still recovering from last month's typhoon, and his neighbor Robert (A) comes out to greet him.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Bernie, buti nakauwi ka na! Ang laki ng pinsala ng bagyo.

Bernie, good to have you home! The typhoon did so much damage.

  2. B

Nasa barko ako noon. Ano ang nangyari?

I was on the ship back then. What happened?

  3. A

Una, nag-brownout. Tapos, umapaw ang ilog sa kalye natin.

First, the power went out. Then the river overflowed into our street.

  4. B

    E paano kayo nakaligtas?

So how did you all make it out?

  5. A

Sinagip kami ng mga tanod. Relief lang ang kain namin sa evacuation center.

The tanods rescued us. At the evacuation center, all we had to eat was relief goods.
