Day 138 of 160

Day 138: Two Years for the Province

In Tanauan, Batangas, Glenn (A), a young nursing graduate on a provincial scholarship, visits his neighbor Lola Felisa (B), a retired school principal, on her porch to talk about a proposal that would require scholars to work in the province for two years after graduating.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  1. A

Lola, have you read the proposal for the provincial scholars?

  2. B

Nabasa ko. Dalawang taong serbisyo rito pagkatapos ng board exam, 'di ba?

I have. Two years of service here after the board exam, right?

  3. A

Yes, and it isn't fair. What about the ones who want to work abroad for their families?

  4. B

You're the province's scholars, young man. It was the taxes of the people of Batangas that put you through school.

  5. A

Marahil po marami pa ring nurse ang aalis kahit may ganitong patakaran. Babayaran na lang po nila ang scholarship.

Perhaps many nurses will leave anyway, even with a rule like this. They'll just pay back the scholarship.

  6. B

You may be right, but some will probably stay too, once they see how much they're needed here.

  7. A

That's easy to say, Lola, but you've never been a scholar being kept from leaving.

  8. B

I was a provincial scholar too, in 1979. The deal was just two years, but I stayed forty.

  9. A

Forty years? And all they're asking of me is two.
