Day 140: Maria Clara in the Syllabus

In her professor's office at a university in Manila, literature student Princess (A) makes her case to the professor, Delia (B), for teaching the hit TV series Maria Clara at Ibarra, in which a modern student named Klay lands inside Noli Me Tangere, alongside the novel.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Ma'am, could we add Maria Clara at Ibarra to the syllabus, alongside the Noli?

    Teleserye, sa klase ng panitikan? Hindi ba't nobela ni Rizal ang pinag-aaralan natin?

    A teleserye, in a literature class? Isn't it Rizal's novel we're studying?

    Hindi po ba't mas maraming kabataan ang nagbasa ng Noli dahil sa serye?

    Didn't more young people read the Noli because of the series?

    Paano kung ang serye na lang ang alam nila, at akala nila, may Klay sa nobela?

    What if the series is all they know, and they think there's a Klay in the novel?

    Kaya nga po kasabay, hindi kapalit. Panonoorin po nila ang eksena, saka babasahin ang kabanata.

    That's why I said alongside, not instead. They watch the scene, then read the chapter.

    Sino pa ang magbabasa ng kabanata kung napanood na nila ang eksena?

    And who's going to read the chapter once they've seen the scene?

    Ma'am, patas po bang husgahan natin ang seryeng hindi pa natin napapanood?

    Ma'am, is it fair for us to judge a series we haven't watched?

    Sino'ng nagsabing hindi ko napanood? Lahat ng episode, at iyon ang problema: mas gusto ko na si Klay kaysa kay Maria Clara.

    Who said I haven't watched it? Every episode, and that's the problem: I like Klay better than Maria Clara now.
