How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Attorney, ito po 'yung pinirmahan ko. Bentahan daw po, pero utang talaga iyon.
Attorney, this is what I signed. They call it a sale, but it was really a loan.
-
B
Pacto de retro po ito. Magkano po ang natanggap ninyo?
This is a pacto de retro sale. How much did you receive?
-
A
Isandaan at limampung libo po, at sa isang buwan na ang taning.
A hundred and fifty thousand, and the deadline is next month.
-
B
Hindi ba't kayo pa rin po ang nakatira sa lupa at nagbabayad ng amilyar?
Aren't you still the one living on the lot and paying the property tax?
-
A
Opo, ako pa rin po. May kinalaman po ba iyon?
Yes, it's still me. Does that make a difference?
-
B
Kung bentahan po iyon, bakit hindi kayo pinaalis? Ayon po sa batas, puwede itong ituring na sangla.
If it were a sale, why haven't they made you leave? Under the law, this can be treated as a mortgage.
-
A
Ibig sabihin po, akin pa rin ang lupa? Babayaran ko po ang utang, pangako.
So the lot is still mine? I'll pay back the loan, I promise.
