Day 3: A Proverb in the Final Scene
Walking out of a Cinemalaya screening, Edna (A) and her niece Lea (B), who reviews films on her blog, argue about a film on an OFW coming home.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
'Yan ang aral ng pelikula: ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makararating sa paroroonan.
That's the film's lesson: whoever doesn't know how to look back at where they came from will never get where they're going.
-
B
Tama po, Tita, pero apat na beses po yata nilang sinabi 'yon.
True, Tita, but I think they said it four times.
-
A
E ano naman? Minsan, kailangang ulit-ulitin ang aral para tumatak.
So what? Sometimes a lesson has to be repeated to sink in.
-
B
Sa simbahan po, puwede; pero sa pelikula, dapat ipakita, hindi ipangaral.
In church, fine. But a film should show it, not preach it.

A
E 'yung nagmano siya sa nanay niya sa dulo? Walang salita, pero umiyak ang buong sinehan.
And at the end, when he pressed his mother's hand to his forehead? Not a word, and the whole theater cried.
-
B
'Yon nga po ang pinakamaganda, kasi hindi na nila sinabi ang salawikain.
That was the best part, because for once they didn't say the proverb.
-
A
Ikaw talaga! Sige, i-blog mo 'yan, basta banggitin mo ang salawikain kahit minsan.
Oh, you! Fine, blog about it, as long as you mention the proverb at least once.
