Day 37 of 160

Day 37: Paid in Ninety Days

At a café in Makati, Dianne (A), a law student, reads clause by clause the contract an ad agency has sent her friend Celine (B), a freelance illustrator.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Celine, basahin mo 'to: babayaran ka nila siyamnapung araw pagkatapos mong mag-deliver.

Celine, read this: they'll pay you ninety days after you deliver.

  2. B

Siyamnapung araw? Aanhin pa ang damo kung patay na ang kabayo?

Ninety days? What good is the grass if the horse is already dead?

  3. A

Mas malala pa: sa kanila na lahat ng drawing mo, pati mga sketch.

It gets worse: all your drawings become theirs, even the sketches.

  4. B

Pero kailangan ko 'tong project, Dianne. Ang laki ng bayad nila.

But I need this project, Dianne. They pay really well.

  5. A

Ang taong nagigipit, sa patalim kumakapit. Mag-counteroffer tayo: kalahati sa umpisa, ang natitira sa tatlumpung araw.

A desperate person will grab even a blade. Let's make a counteroffer: half up front, the rest in thirty days.

  6. B

At akin pa rin ang mga sketch. Paano kung tumanggi sila?

And the sketches stay mine. What if they say no?

  7. A

E 'di maghanap tayo ng iba. Mas mabuti pang wala kaysa ikaw lang ang lugi.

Then we find someone else. Better no deal than one where only you lose.
