Day 62: Three Meters From the Road

At the Office of the Building Official in Biñan, Laguna, Nadine (A), a young architect, meets Fidel (B), the building official who denied her client a building permit because the garage sits too close to the road.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Good morning. This is about my client's permit, the one that was denied.

  2. B

Opo.

Yes. Under the Building Code, your garage has to be three meters from the road.

  3. A

We're only one meter short, and the lot really is small.

  4. B

I understand. Even so, I can't approve a plan that violates the Code.

  5. A

What if we take the roof off the first meter of the garage?

  6. B

That's possible, as long as there's no roof at all there. Submit a revised plan.

  7. A

Heto na po, pirmado at may selyo na. Ginawa ko po kagabi, para sigurado.

Here it is, already signed and sealed. I did it last night, just to be safe.

  8. B

You came prepared, Architect. In that case, I'll process it right away.
