Day 69 of 160

Day 69: The Tribute Lola Overheard

The night before her eightieth birthday party in San Pedro, Laguna, Paz (B) catches her grandson Jake (A) rehearsing his tribute speech in the garage.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Who here didn't grow up on Lola's adobo? Wasn't she the one who put us through school?

  2. B

Aba, may nagtatalumpati sa garahe ko. Ituloy mo, gusto kong marinig lahat.

Well, well, somebody's giving a speech in my garage. Go on, I want to hear all of it.

  3. A

La, sorpresa po sana 'yan bukas! Kanina pa po ba kayo riyan?

La, that was supposed to be a surprise for tomorrow! Have you been there long?

  4. B

Since the adobo. Wasn't it your lolo who did the cooking back then?

  5. A

Really? But putting us through school, that part's true.

  6. B

True, but what if your aunts hadn't sent money home? Would you have a diploma?

  7. A

I'll change it: "Aren't we all the fruit of the whole family's sacrifice?"

  8. B

Better. But keep the adobo in, because I'm the one who taught your lolo.
