Day 98 of 160

Day 98: No Promises About the Ankle

Minutes before the post-game press conference at an arena in Quezon City, team manager Bobby (A) prepares head coach Edwin (B) for questions about their star player's sprained ankle.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Coach, they're sure to ask how Kurt's ankle is. Don't promise anything, okay?

  2. B

I want to tell the fans the truth. We don't know yet when he'll be back.

  3. A

That's exactly the problem. If you say "we don't know," the fans will panic.

  4. B

So what do you want me to say, that he'll play in Game 3 even if he's limping?

  5. A

Not that either. Try this: "He may not be able to play in Game 3."

  6. B

Ganoon ba?

He may not be able to play in Game 3, and it seems he'll need another week of rest. Like that?

  7. A

Perfect. Totoo, maingat, at walang reporter na makakapagsabing nagsinungaling tayo.

Perfect. It's true, it's careful, and no reporter can say we lied.

  8. B

Sige.

Fine. But I'm also going to say his ankle matters more to me than one win.
