Day 1: Sarcasm Is Not a Confession
At the fact-checking desk of an online news site, Irene (A), the editor, stops Gwen (B), a young fact-checker, just before she uploads a "False" rating for a town councilor's viral line about owning the whole town.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Gwen, sandali, huwag mo munang i-upload.
Gwen, hold on, don't upload that yet. You're really rating Councilor Santiago "False"?
-
B
Yes. I already called the assessor's office, and he doesn't own a single lot.
-
A
Pakinggan mo hanggang dulo.
Did you watch the whole video, or just the cut-up clip? Listen all the way to the end.
-
B
"Fine, yes, I own the whole town, and the moon too." Okay, it's sarcastic, but thousands have already shared it as a confession.
-
A
Sure, and while we're at it, let's rate "What lovely weather" as "False" every time it rains.
-
B
Come on, Ma'am, that's different. Nobody shares "What lovely weather" with the caption "HE CONFESSED!"
-
A
There's the real claim: it's not the joke that's false, it's the caption of whoever cropped the clip.
-
B
Then it's the post we check, and the rating is "Missing Context."
-
A
Right, write it up. You're so quick, and it's only eleven-forty.
-
B
Opo, Ma'am, aabot po bago mag-alas-dose. Seryoso po 'yan, hindi sarcastic.
Yes, Ma'am, it'll be up before noon. And I mean that seriously, not sarcastically.
