Day 102 of 135

Day 102: The Wrong Strength on the Label

In the pharmacy of a public hospital in Manila at the end of a night shift, chief pharmacist Marilou (B) calls in Jeff (A), a young pharmacist, because the medicine he dispensed for an older patient on the medical ward was ten times the prescribed strength.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma'am, pinatawag po ninyo ako? Tungkol po ba ito sa Ward 3?

Ma'am, you sent for me? Is this about Ward 3?

  2. B

Sit down. The patient is stable, but she's still being monitored. I'm not punishing you, but I need the whole truth.

  3. A

Ma'am, I thought, you see... There was no zero before the decimal point, so I read it as "five."

  4. B

I saw the order. It really was written wrong, and that goes in the report. But did you double-check?

  5. A

I noticed it was high for her age. But it was three in the morning, and the last time I called the resident, he yelled at me...

  6. B

Salamat at sinabi mo.

Thank you for telling me. We'll write it all down, the yelling included, because that's a problem with the system too.

  7. A

Will I be fired, Ma'am? I only passed the board last year.

  8. B

I don't know, and I won't sugarcoat it. What I do know is that it goes worse when something's been hidden.

  9. A

What about the family? Her granddaughter is the one who thanked me yesterday.

  10. B

At nine this morning, we'll talk to them with the attending. You'll tell them what happened, and I'll handle what comes next.

  11. A

Me? Ma'am, I don't know if I can face her granddaughter.

  12. B

Kaya mo.

You can. It's harder to face the mirror if you don't. Wash your face first, then write everything down.
