Day 103 of 135

Day 103: A Three-Minute Putong

At a beach resort in Marinduque, Lolo Gusting (A), leader of a putong group, and his singers Cora (B) and Wilma (D) have just heard from Jake (C), the young events manager, that their welcome song for a busload of tourists must be cut to three minutes.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Only three minutes? Son, the putong is a prayer that's sung, not a commercial you just cut.

  2. B

Labing-isang minuto po ang buo, Tatang. Jake, bawat berso niyan, may binebendisyunan.

The whole thing runs eleven minutes, Tatang. Jake, every verse of it blesses something.

  3. C

I'm sorry, but a whole busload of tourists is coming, and they have a ferry to catch this afternoon.

  4. D

Well then, which one do we drop, Jake, the blessing for health or the one for travel?

  5. B

Huwag ang paglalakbay, Wilma: "Sa inyong paglalayag, alon nawa'y humimlay." Sasakay pa sila ng barko!

Not the one for travel, Wilma: "As you sail the waters, may the waves lie still." They've still got a boat to take!

  6. D

And the one for health: "May strength of body never leave your side." The bus is full of seniors, Cora!

  7. A

Jake, you choose. Which of the blessings don't you want your guests to receive?

  8. C

Oh, come on, Lolo Gusting, it's like you're making me pick which of them gets sick.

  9. D

Ganyan ngani ang putong, Jake. Ang bawat bersong tinatanggal, may naiiwang walang bendisyon.

That's just how the putong is, Jake. Every verse you cut leaves somebody without a blessing.

  10. C

All right, we won't cut the putong. What I'll cut instead is the resort's ten-minute video, nobody blesses anybody in that.

  11. A

May natutuhan ka rin, iho. Halika rito, ikaw ang uunahin naming putungan.

You've learned something after all, son. Come here, you're the first one we'll crown.
