Day 106: Two Hikers Missing on Batulao
At dusk at the foot of Mount Batulao in Nasugbu, Batangas, Roland (A), leader of a rescue team from Manila, and Leo (B), a local guide who has climbed the mountain since boyhood, plan the search for two hikers who stopped answering their phones in the afternoon, with rain coming.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Kuya Leo, their last text was at two o'clock. We'll wait for the thermal drone, it gets here at five in the morning.
-
B
Aantayin pa po ga natin ang umaga? Ilog na po ang daan pagdating niyan.
We're going to wait for morning? By then the trail will be a river.
-
A
Protocol po 'yan, Kuya: walang night ops kapag may kidlat. Ayoko pong madagdagan pa ang hahanapin bukas.
That's protocol, Kuya: no night ops when there's lightning. I don't want more people to search for tomorrow.
-
B
That's only thunder, Sir. I grew up right here, I know this mountain like the back of my hand.
-
A
This is their last pin: between the old trail and the ravine.
-
B
There? But that's where the water runs, that's where all the runoff pours down when it rains.
-
A
Then that's a flash flood risk. But what if you get trapped there too?
-
B
I won't go down into it, I'll go along the ridge. It's only an hour's climb, with two of your people.
-
A
Sige po, hasty team kayo at dalawa sa amin. Radio check po bawat labinlimang minuto, at alas-nuwebe, balik kayo.
All right, a hasty team, you and two of ours. Radio check every fifteen minutes, and at nine, you come back.
-
B
Opo.
Yes. But once I've found them, I won't leave them just because of the clock.
-
A
If you find them, send the coordinates right away, and we'll come up with the stretcher. Tonight you're a guide, not a hero.
-
B
A guide, yes, that's why I go first. The rain doesn't wait for drones.
