Day 107 of 135

Day 107: Doubts About Lola's Amorsolo

At an auction house in Makati, Edward (A), a young paintings specialist, sits down with his college friend Diego (B), whose family has consigned an Amorsolo landscape, their late grandmother's pride, a week before the sale they are counting on.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Pare, thanks for coming. I hate to be the one to tell you this, but there's a problem with the provenance of your family's Amorsolo.

  2. B

Provenance? Ed, isang linggo na lang ang auction. Anong problema, kulang ba ang papeles?

Provenance? Ed, the auction's in a week. What's the problem, are some papers missing?

  3. A

There's no record before 1975, no receipt, no exhibition history. And under UV light, the signature sits on top of the varnish.

  4. B

I didn't understand half of that. Give it to me straight, Ed: is Lola's painting a fake?

  5. A

It means the signature was added after the painting was varnished. And it's dated 1931, but the blue in the sky wasn't in use yet back then.

  6. B

Ed, kaibigan mo ako, huwag mo akong i-PowerPoint. Oo o hindi lang.

Ed, I'm your friend, don't give me a PowerPoint. Just yes or no.

  7. A

As a friend, I can't tell you it's fake. As a specialist, I can't tell you it's real, so it can't go into the auction.

  8. B

Pare, that's where the money for the bank was supposed to come from. For fifty years Lola showed it off to every guest.

  9. A

I know. I had merienda in Lola's living room plenty of times back in college. That's why I checked it three times.

  10. B

Lola's story was that Lolo bought it with his first paycheck as an engineer. Was that a lie too?

  11. A

No. He could really have bought it, and been fooled as well. If you want, we'll have it lab-tested, on me.

  12. B

Don't bother. I don't want to know if Lolo got cheated. I'll take Lola home, I mean, the painting, and go plead with the bank instead.
