Day 110: His Accent Went Viral
At home in Rosario, Batangas, Remy (A) has just heard that her son Matthew (B), who spent his college years in Manila hiding his Batangas accent, now has a following for videos in which he speaks nothing else.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Matthew, your Tiya Belen called. She says you're famous on the internet because of your accent?
-
B
Opo, Ma, two hundred thousand followers na po. It's giving authentic po, kaya nag-viral.
Yes, Ma, two hundred thousand followers already. It's giving authentic, that's why it went viral.
-
A
For four years in Manila you hid your accent, not a single "ga" out of you.
-
B
Real talk, I was embarrassed back then, they laughed at me in the dorm. Now that's the very thing that made me famous.
-
A
So who's that woman in the duster in your videos, always yelling "Matthew, have you eaten, ga?"
-
B
Oh, that's "Nanay Remy," Ma, my most popular character. It's a tribute, not making fun, no cap.
-
A
You even used my name! I don't know whether to be happy or pinch you on the inner thigh.
-
B
You'll be happy, promise. A kapeng barako brand wants to sponsor me, and you're the one they want in the video.
-
A
Me? But didn't you say our accent was embarrassing, back then?
-
B
Sorry po, Ma, mali po ako noon. Ala eh, ganire po talaga ako magsalita.
Sorry, Ma, I was wrong back then. Ala eh, this is just how I talk.
-
A
Well, good thing you came to your senses. All right, I'll do it, but I write Nanay Remy's lines, and no "it's giving."
-
B
You're so mother, Ma! I mean, okay, no "mother." You're the star, I'm just the editor.
