At a trial court in Tayabas, Quezon, Jonas (A), a young Manila lawyer in his first trial, cross-examines Imelda (B), who ran a paluwagan among twelve market vendors until his client collected her turn and stopped paying in, before Judge Bernadette (C), who grew up two towns away.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

  1. A

Ma'am, were you the one who organized the paluwagan among twelve vendors at the Tayabas market?

  2. B

I ran it, yes, Attorney. Dine where we live, the payments were every Saturday, a thousand pesos each.

  3. A

I'm sorry, Ma'am, "dine"? Do you mean the payments were made over dinner?

  4. C

Counsel, "dine" means "here." Don't worry, I'll be your interpreter this morning.

  5. A

Salamat po, Your Honor.

Thank you, Your Honor. Ma'am, was my client the first to take her turn, twelve thousand pesos?

  6. B

Ala eh, opo!

Ala eh, yes! And once she'd got her turn, didn't she stop showing up, ga?

  7. A

Ma'am, are you asking me? I don't know if she showed up, you're the witness.

  8. C

Counsel, she isn't asking you. The witness means your client never showed up again.

  9. A

Ma'am, isn't it true that you yourself changed the order of the turns in March?

  10. B

Yes, it was changed, all right, but she's the one who begged to go first, she said she had a debt to pay in Lucena.

  11. C

For the record, Ma'am, please say it again, slowly: who asked to take the first turn?

  12. B

Attorney's client, Your Honor. She went first, and she was also the first to disappear.
