Day 113: No Hilot After Hip Surgery
On the orthopedic ward of a hospital in Batangas City, two days after her husband's hip operation, Lola Conching (A) asks Herminio (B), the nurse supervisor, to let the manghihilot from their village massage his leg.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

A
Iho, let Tata Osting in so he can massage Pidyong's leg.
-
B
I'm sorry, Lola, not yet. It's only been two days since Lolo Pidyong's operation.
-
A
That hilot has been healing people for forty years. You think you're better than him?
-
B
We're not belittling Tata Osting. But if the new implant in his hip gets twisted, it can dislocate.
-
A
Ano ga iyang dislocate?
What's this dislocate? Bones knocked out of joint are exactly what Tata Osting puts back!
-
B
That's just it: we don't want there to be anything for him to put back. If the ball of the implant comes out of its socket, that means another operation.
-
A
He won't twist it, he'll just stroke it with coconut oil. What's the harm in that?
-
B
Delikado rin po ang haplos ngayon. Baka po may namuong dugo sa ugat, at kapag nahilot, puwedeng umakyat sa baga.
Even stroking it is dangerous right now. There might be a blood clot in the vein, and if it's massaged, it can travel to the lungs.
-
A
To the lungs? So what are we supposed to do, just pray?
-
B
There's nothing wrong with praying. But tomorrow his physical therapy starts, and Tata Osting is welcome to watch.
-
A
Manood lamang?
Just watch? Why, Tata Osting might end up teaching your therapist.
-
B
He might. But there's one patient he can massage right now: you, Lola, three nights now without sleep.
