Day 114: One Wrong Word in Bronze
Twelve hours before the unveiling of a monument in Tondo, Manila, project head Gregorio (A) and sculptor Rhea (B) hear from Jules (C), a young researcher, that a line of Bonifacio's poem cast on its bronze plaque has one word wrong.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Labindalawang oras na lang bago ang unveiling. Jules, ano 'yung sinasabi mong emergency?
Twelve hours to go before the unveiling. Jules, what's this emergency of yours?
-
B
Sana mahalaga 'yan, Jules. Katatapos ko lang pakinangin ang plake, kumikislap pa sa ilaw.
I hope it's important, Jules. I just finished polishing the plaque, it's gleaming under the lights.
-
C
Iyon nga po ang problema. Sa ikatlong taludtod po, "sinilangang lupa" ang nakaukit, pero "tinubuang lupa" po ang isinulat ni Bonifacio.
That's exactly the problem. In the third line, the plaque says "sinilangang lupa," but Bonifacio wrote "tinubuang lupa."
-
A
Isang salita lang? Pareho lang naman ang ibig sabihin, lupang sinilangan, lupang tinubuan. Sino'ng makakapansin?
One word? It means the same thing, the land you were born in, the land you grew up in. Who's going to notice?
-
C
Nasa guest list po ang NHCP, Sir. At magkaiba po: ang tinubuan ay kung saan tayo tumubo, parang punlang nag-ugat sa lupa.
The NHCP is on the guest list, Sir. And they're different: tinubuan is where we grew, like a seedling that took root in the soil.
-
B
Tama siya, Greg. Sa internet ko kinuha ang teksto, at doon pala galing ang mali.
He's right, Greg. I took the text off the internet, and that's where the mistake came from.
-
A
O, sige, ano'ng magagawa natin? Ilang araw ang recasting, at magkano?
All right, what can we do? How many days to recast it, and how much?
-
B
Tatlong linggo, at mga dalawandaang libo. Pero kaya kong takpan ng bagong letra ang salita magdamag, kahit halata sa malapitan.
Three weeks, and around two hundred thousand. But I can cover the word with new letters overnight, even if it shows up close.
-
C
Puwede rin po ninyong sabihin sa talumpati na may mali, at itatama. Mas nakakahiya po kung NHCP pa ang makapansin.
You could also say in the speech that there's a mistake and it will be corrected. It would be worse if the NHCP spotted it first.
-
A
Hindi. Kay Bonifacio ang mga salitang iyan, hindi atin. Rhea, takpan mo magdamag, at sa susunod na buwan, recasting.
No. Those words are Bonifacio's, not ours. Rhea, cover it overnight, and next month, we recast.
-
B
Sige, pero kailangan ko ng mata. Jules, ikaw ang magbabantay sa bawat letra, ayokong magkamali ulit.
All right, but I need a pair of eyes. Jules, you check every letter, I don't want another mistake.
-
C
Opo, Ma'am. Babasahin ko po nang malakas habang nagtatrabaho kayo: "Aling pag-ibig pa ang hihigit kaya sa pagkadalisay at pagkadakila..."
Yes, Ma'am. I'll read it aloud while you work: "What other love could ever surpass, in purity and in greatness..."
