In the sales office of a hotel in Malate, Manila, on the night before his daughter's wedding, Alberto (A), the father of the bride, is called in by Rosalie (B), the hotel's events manager.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Magandang gabi po, Ma'am Rosalie. Ano po ang problema sa ballroom?
Good evening, Ma'am Rosalie. What's the problem with the ballroom?
-
B
Please have a seat first, Sir. The ballroom was double-booked, and the other family paid in full first.
-
A
I'm not blaming you, but two hundred guests are arriving tomorrow. Who are they? I'll talk to them myself.
-
B
I can't give out their names, and under the contract, the date goes to whoever paid in full first.
-
A
I don't want to make a scene, Ma'am, but did your agent read that too, the one who told me, "You're all set, Sir"?
-
B
He was wrong, and we admit it. So I'm offering you the Poolside Garden, with an air-conditioned tent, all at our expense.
-
A
It's June, Ma'am. If it pours, will you be the one explaining it to my daughter?
-
B
If it rains, the function room upstairs will be ready too. Two setups, to be safe.
-
A
One more thing: I don't want my daughter to know this was a mistake. Could you call it an "upgrade"?
-
B
Opo, Sir.
Yes, Sir. In front of your daughter, it's an upgrade, and I'll look after her myself.
-
A
Thank you. But to me, it's still a mistake; we'll talk about the contract after the wedding.
-
B
Count on it, Sir. After the wedding, I'll still be right here.
