Day 120 of 135

Day 120: The Lechon's Costume This Year

Two days before the lechon parade in Balayan, Batangas, Maica (A), home from college in Manila, shows her aunt Maricel (B), whose family has paraded a costumed lechon every June for thirty years, her idea for this year's costume.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Tita, look at this: a silver wig, a pink suit jacket. This year our lechon's a K-pop idol!

  2. B

You really want to turn our lechon into a Korean star? Thirty years, and our pig has never once worn a wig.

  3. A

Come on, Tita, the judges are young now. How many years have we been parading a lechon in a barong?

  4. B

Your Tito Domeng won three times with that barong. And what are you going to compete with, silver hair?

  5. A

It's not just the hair, Tita. The lechon will dance on a turntable, with K-pop playing too.

  6. B

E pagdating ng basaan? Ang litson nati'y magmumukhang basang sisiw.

And when the water-throwing starts? Our lechon will look like a drowned rat.

  7. A

The wig's waterproof, Tita, and the speaker's wrapped in plastic; I already tested them earlier in your bathroom.

  8. B

So that's why my floor was wet earlier. And what would your Tito Domeng say about a lechon in pink?

  9. A

Tito Domeng is the one who taught me how to win. He always used to say, "A lechon should be the talk of the town till Christmas."

  10. B

Why, now you're even using your uncle against me. Fine, but on one condition: your idol wears a barong.

  11. A

Payag po ako, basta pink po ang barong, at may burdang "Domeng" sa likod.

I'm in, as long as the barong is pink, with "Domeng" embroidered on the back.

  12. B

A pink barong, no less! You really do take after your uncle. If we lose, I'm dousing you myself, a whole drum's worth.
