Day 129: Debt Before Dawn at Navotas

At three in the morning at the Navotas Fish Port, Carding (A), who owns two fishing boats, comes looking for Eric (B), the consignee who has advanced his fuel and ice for years.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

  1. A

Eric, I came to you first, before the whisper auction starts. It's about my debt.

  2. B

Alam ko. Walong daang libo na, Carding: krudo at yelo ng tatlong buwang halos walang huli.

I know. It's eight hundred thousand now, Carding: fuel and ice for three months of almost no catch.

  3. A

Burahin mo ang kalahati. Ang matitira, babayaran ko pagkatapos ng habagat.

Write off half. I'll pay the rest after the monsoon.

  4. B

Kalahati?

Half? I have creditors too, Carding. If I write that off, who's going to write off mine?

  5. A

I'm not asking for charity, I'm asking for time. Twenty years, and I've sold my catch through nobody but you.

  6. B

And for twenty years I've fronted you the money. Time has a price too; ask my bank.

  7. A

If we can't agree, I know who ends up with my boats. But remember this, Eric, if I lose my boats...

  8. B

    Ano, Carding? Ituloy mo.

What, Carding? Go on, finish it.

  9. A

Twelve crewmen work those boats. You know their kids; two of them are your godchildren.

  10. B

Here's the deal: nothing comes off the principal, but I'll drop the interest, and you pay it off over two years. But if you miss again...

  11. A

I know what comes next, you don't have to say it. And if there's another monsoon with no catch...

  12. B

Then we both go under, so we'll both be praying. Come on, coffee first; your Lady Linda just docked.
