Day 130: Mama Is Marrying Again

Over merienda at her house in Mandaluyong, Josefa (A), a retired nurse of seventy-eight, has news for her son Arnel (B).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Have some puto first, Arnel, before I tell you this. I'm getting married in March.

  2. B

Ma, sandali po. Ikakasal po kayo? Kanino po, at kailan pa po ito?

Ma, wait. You're getting married? To whom, and since when?

  3. A

To Delfin, the widower I dance with in the seniors' ballroom class at city hall.

  4. B

Ma, what about Dad? He's only been gone ten years, and you still light a candle for him every night.

  5. A

And I still will. Love for the departed doesn't shrink because there's someone new to love; it isn't rice you have to divide.

  6. B

But, Ma, what will people say? The aunts, the neighbors, your friends?

  7. A

Son, at my age, I know more people in the cemetery than outside it. The ones still around will just be jealous.

  8. B

Ma, I'm not joking. What if it's the house or your pension he's after?

  9. A

May sarili siyang bahay, at mas malaki pa ang pensiyon niya. At may prenup kami, anak; nurse ako, hindi tanga.

He has his own house, and his pension is bigger than mine. And we have a prenup, son; I'm a nurse, not a fool.

  10. B

Ma, I feel like if I say yes, it's as if I've turned my back on Dad.

  11. A

Son, I'm not asking for permission, I'm just letting you know. But I want you to be the one to walk me down the aisle.

  12. B

All right, Ma, I'll walk you down. But teach me the cha-cha first; I don't want to embarrass myself in front of Mang Delfin.
