Day 131 of 135

Day 131: The Harana Song, Sixty Years On

On their sixtieth wedding anniversary in Lemery, Batangas, Lolo Nardo (B) picks up his guitar to sing Lola Vising (A) the harana he sang under her window before they married.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Nardo, what's that guitar for? Sixty years you haven't sung a note, and now you want to show off?

  2. B

E anibersaryo natin, Vising.

Well, it's our anniversary, Vising. I'm going to sing the harana I sang under your family's window back then.

  3. A

All right, but do you have the words right? You're old now, you might sing something else entirely.

  4. B

Pakinggan mo: "Dungawin mo, aking mutya, ang binatang iyong hinintay."

Listen: "Look down from your window, my jewel, at the young man you waited for."

  5. A

You're wrong! You sang "the young man who weeps." You were the one weeping under the window; I wasn't the one waiting.

  6. B

Lumuluha?

Weeping? Why, I've never cried in my life. You were the one at the window every night, waiting to see if I'd pass by.

  7. A

Go on, count: yours has nine syllables, one too many, and it doesn't even rhyme with "mutya."

  8. B

Were you deaf back then? I put in the extra syllable on purpose, so the note would last longer and you'd stay at the window.

  9. A

I wasn't deaf, and I have proof. Here's the paper you tossed up to my window that night.

  10. B

Ire ga? Pareho pala tayong tama.

This one? "The young man who weeps," crossed out, and above it, "you waited for." So we're both right.

  11. A

Ganoon ngani.

That's right. You did the weeping on paper, and I did the waiting at the window; that's why I kept it.

  12. B

Well, then, I'll sing the whole thing, extra syllable and all: "Look down from your window, my jewel..."
