Day 14 of 135

Day 14: Leave the Hiss on the Tape

In a recording studio in Quezon City, Raul (A), a sound engineer remastering kundiman recordings from the 1960s for a reissue, plays the cleaned-up tracks for the singer herself, Mila (B), now in her eighties.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Ma'am Mila, I cleaned up the noise floor and EQ'd the mids of your voice a little.

  2. B

Iho, mang-aawit ako, hindi inhinyero. Ulitin mo sa salitang naiintindihan ko.

Young man, I'm a singer, not an engineer. Say it again in words I understand.

  3. A

I took out the hiss of the tape, that sound like something frying, and made your voice clearer.

  4. B

Kaya pala parang may kulang.

So that's why something's missing. Where's my breath before the high note?

  5. A

The noise reduction took that out too. The software mistook your breath for noise.

  6. B

Ingay?

Noise? That's where I breathed so I could lift the note, and that's where the listener breathes too.

  7. A

But if I put all the hiss back, that's what young listeners will hear.

  8. B

I'd rather have the hiss than a voice that doesn't breathe.

  9. A

How about this: I'll bypass the noise reduction on your breaths, and leave a little hiss in.

  10. B

Iba-bypass?

Bypass? Just say you won't touch my breathing, and I'll agree.
