Day 15: Rain on the Kiping at Dawn
At dawn on the day of the Pahiyas festival in Lucban, Quezon, Helen (A), the town's tourism officer, comes with news for her old schoolmate Lani (B), whose house is covered in the kiping she spent three nights making.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Lani, good, you're up. PAGASA says heavy rain is coming before nine.
-
B
Helen, won't the kiping be ruined if it rains all morning? I spent three nights making those!
-
A
The kiping will go soft and the colors will run. So there are two choices: wrap it in plastic, or take it down.
-
B
If I wrap it in plastic, what will the judges see, a house in a raincoat?
-
A
E 'di tanggalin muna, tapos ibalik mo pagtila ng ulan, bago mag-alas-onse.
Then take it down for now, and put it back up once the rain stops, before eleven.
-
B
Daan-daan ang kiping dine, isa-isa kong ikinabit, kalahati ang madudurog kapag tinanggal.
There are hundreds of kiping up here, and I put each one up by hand. Take them down and half will crumble.
-
A
Oo ngani.
You're right. We cover what's on the roof with a tarp, and wrap the front in clear plastic.
-
B
Aba, lumabas din ang pagka-Lucban mo. May plastik ga sa sasakyan mo?
Well, look who's a Lucban girl again. Is there any plastic in your car?
-
A
A whole roll, and I'll send two barangay tanods for the roof.
-
B
Salamat, Helen.
Thank you, Helen. And if the kiping gets ruined anyway, we'll just toast it, like we did when we were kids.
