Day 16: Three Cones and a Flowerpot
In the practice lot of a driving school in Quezon City, the day before her driving test at the LTO, Rica (B) backs into the same flowerpot for the third time while her instructor Roger (A) looks on.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Brilliant, Rica. I've never seen anyone back into a flowerpot that fast. That's the third time, by the way.
-
B
I'm sorry, Sir! I can't see the flowerpot in the side mirror.
-
A
It is a small flowerpot. That must be why you've gone looking for it with the bumper three times.
-
B
My LTO test is tomorrow, Sir. Maybe you could be a little more encouraging.
-
A
I am encouraging. You didn't hit any of the three cones. You went for the flowerpot.
-
B
There, Sir, right between the cones, and the flowerpot's still alive!
-
A
Aba, kahanga-hanga.
Well, impressive. Pity, I'd gotten used to the sound of that flowerpot.
-
B
Thank you, Sir, I learned from you. And you, how many did you hit on your first test?
-
A
Wala akong tinamaang paso.
I didn't hit any flowerpots. I backed into a pole at the LTO, so I failed.
-
B
Brilliant, Sir. I've never met an instructor who practiced on a pole before.
