Day 17 of 135

Day 17: Voting on the Second Floor

On election morning at a public school in Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro, Rachel (A), the town's election officer, asks Joey (B), the teacher who chairs a precinct's electoral board, why his line has stopped moving.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Joey, bakit hindi umuusad ang pila mo? Umabot na sa hagdan.

Joey, why isn't your line moving? It's reached the stairs.

  2. B

Rachel, how are the grandpas and grandmas supposed to climb to the second floor? Three have already gone home.

  3. A

They shouldn't have to go home without voting. We have an EAPP, an emergency accessible polling place, on the ground floor for them.

  4. B

I know that, but their ballots are in my precinct, up here.

  5. A

One of your board can take the ballot down, as long as a watcher goes along and it's logged in the minutes.

  6. B

So just two of us left upstairs, with a line that long?

  7. A

I'll send support staff. We're not stepping one inch outside the rules.

  8. B

Ayos iyan.

That works. I'll take Lola Iska first. She's been sitting on the stairs for ages.

  9. A

I'll go down with her ballot myself, and you write the time in the minutes.

  10. B

With all our running up and down, we'll probably be the ones out of breath, not the grandpas and grandmas.
