Day 30: Florante at Laura at Dinner
At dinner at home in Caloocan, Nikki (A) notices that her teenage brother Ezekiel (B), who has to recite a stanza of Florante at Laura in Filipino class tomorrow, is answering everything in the archaic Tagalog of Balagtas.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Zeke, are you going to eat or just stare at the sinigang? You've been spacing out for a while.
-
B
Ate, if it please thee, pass this humble servant that fish sauce.
-
A
Ah, Florante at Laura ang recitation mo bukas, 'no? Heto ang patis, abang alipin, nawa'y huwag mong ubusin.
Ah, your recitation tomorrow is Florante at Laura, isn't it? Here is the fish sauce, humble servant; mayst thou not finish it all.

B
Salamat, Ate.
Thanks, Ate. "In a forest dark and gloomy," that's how Filipino class feels to me.
-
A
"Thorny brambles with no gap between," just like your room full of laundry.
-
B
Come on, Ate, don't sully Balagtas. "One raised in pampering is commonly bare of sense and thought."
-
A
"And the boy too lazy to wash up the dishes, at his Ate's table shall find no good fortune."
-
B
Teka, pang-ilang saknong 'yan?
Wait, which stanza is that? I think I've actually heard that from Ma'am Dizon.
-
A
Look it up in the book later, after you've washed the dishes, humble servant.
-
B
"O love, exceeding mighty," even my dishes fall beneath thy sway. Wait, is that in the poem, or did I just make it up?
