Day 31: Haggling Over a Dozen Lechons

In La Loma, Quezon City, Cecille (A), a caterer, comes to order lechon for the December weddings from Aling Corazon (B), who has supplied her for years.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Aling Corazon, a dozen lechons, please, for the twelve weddings I'm catering this December.

  2. B

Thank you, Cecille, but a whole one is eleven thousand now. Hogs are expensive these days.

  3. A

Eleven thousand? Your prices went up, so my blood pressure went up too.

  4. B

Sige, sampung libo't walong daan.

Then you and my lechon make a fine pair, you both raise blood pressure. All right, ten thousand eight hundred.

  5. A

There's no fat left on my offer, it's down to the bone: ten thousand, sauce included.

  6. B

Sampung libo't limandaan, huling tawad.

Lechon gets spun over the coals, but you can't spin me. Ten thousand five hundred, final offer.

  7. A

All right, ten thousand five hundred, as long as the sauce is free, so my laugh comes out crispy too.

  8. B

You've got some nerve, thick-skinned like my lechon. Oh, fine, the sauce is free.

  9. A

Thank you, you're still the queen of La Loma, even if you don't come cheap.

  10. B

That's right, I'm not mura anymore, not cheap and not young, so pay me early.
