Day 37: Senior Discount, Junior Appetites
At a Chinese restaurant in Binondo, after the seventy-fifth birthday lunch of Oring (B) with her grandchildren, the cashier tells her and her two old friends, Gaying (A) and Melchor (C), that the senior citizen discount covers only what they ate themselves.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
So the discount only covers what we ate. Well, how about that, I'm the one who polished off three orders of siopao.
-
B
And I, the birthday girl, finished two plates of yang chow, even though I'm not allowed rice.
-
C
And me, I finished the pata tim all by myself, bones too. I'm told I need calcium.
-
A
I've done the math, as a retired teacher: the three of us ate ten dishes, and the grandkids had only water.
-
B
My poor grandkids, only water, no wonder they're too full to stand up.
-
C
Back when I was a conductor, a senior's discount covered his seat, not his lap.
-
A
You're siding with the cashier, Melchor? Your betrayal should get a senior discount too.
-
C
I'm not siding with anyone. I just remember that on the bus, a grandkid with their own seat pays their own fare.
-
B
Melchor's right. My grandkids each have their own seats, their own jobs and their own stomachs.
-
A
You mean they'll pay for their own food, on your birthday of all days?
-
B
That's their present to me. Kids, come over here, and bring your wallets!
