Day 38: Nineties OPM Versus P-Pop
Stuck in holiday traffic on the way to a family reunion in Laguna, Ian (A) and his mother, Perla (B), fight over the car's music, her 1990s OPM against his P-pop.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

Mom, that's the fourth time we've heard that song. Can we have some P-pop for a change?

Bawal. Kotse ko 'to, playlist ko 'to, at ang Eraserheads, astig, hindi baduy.
Nope. My car, my playlist, and the Eraserheads are cool, not corny.

Kaya nga po OPM, Ma, "Old People's Music."
That's why they call it OPM, Mom: "Old People's Music." That song is older than I am.

Ows? E 'yang P-pop mo, ano'ng ibig sabihin, Puro Pa-cute?
Oh, yeah? And your P-pop, what does that stand for? Puro Pa-cute, all cutesy poses?

Mom, SB19 is world-class. They perform abroad, not just at the titos' videoke nights.

And your BINI? Son, I was a binibini, a young miss, back in '95, so I'm the original BINI.

The original, sure, but off-key. Waze even rerouted us earlier when you sang.

How rude, no poise at all! My voice is made for Tawag ng Tanghalan, the singing contest; yours is made for calling people to lunch.

Okay, truce for now, Mom. Just one song we both know, anything.

Pareho nating alam?
One we both know? Son, it's December. There's only one song every Filipino knows.

Jose Mari Chan! Okay, but I'll sing the harmony, so Waze doesn't reroute us again.
