Day 41: Two Weddings in One Year
At their house in Tayabas, Quezon, Lolo Gorio (A), a retired farmer, asks his grandson Melvin (C) when his wedding will be, while Lola Lumen (B), a retired midwife, listens in.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Melvin, apo, kailan baga ang kasal ninyo? Magpapatahi pa ako ng barong.
Melvin, my boy, so when's the wedding? I still have to have a barong made.
-
B
December, Gorio, he told me yesterday. You're the only one who never listens.
-
C
Yes, Lolo, the second Saturday. Ate Mylene's is in June.
-
A
Sukob baga 'yan, dalawang kasal sa iisang taon? Paghahatian ninyong magkapatid ang suwerte!
Isn't that sukob, two weddings in the same year? You two siblings will end up splitting the luck!
-
B
Oh, please, superstitions again. Luck isn't a suman, a rice cake tossed to the crowd at the Mayohan: once somebody catches it, nobody else gets it.
-
A
This is experience, not superstition. The Ilagan siblings got married the same year, and a typhoon flattened the youngest one's coconut grove.
-
B
That same typhoon flattened our coconut grove too. Were we sukob as well?
-
C
Lolo, Lola, if it helps, we could always move it to January...
-
B
Huwag, apo.
Don't, my boy. Gorio, have you forgotten? We got married in May, and your sister Lilia in November of that same year.
-
A
That's exactly why I've had to put up with you for fifty years. Lilia got the luck, and I got the sermons.
-
B
Go ahead with December, my boy. Twins even come into the world together, and not one pair I ever delivered split their luck.
