Day 52 of 135

Day 52: The Dispatcher's Batangas Puns

At the Grand Terminal in Batangas City, Elvin (A), a new jeepney driver from Manila, asks Aling Fe (B), the veteran dispatcher, about the routes to the towns of the province.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Aling Fe, I'm new here. Where's the line for Lipa, the one that goes through Lobo?

  2. B

Lipa na dadaan sa Lobo? Lumilipad ga ang jeep mo, iho, parang lobo?

Lipa by way of Lobo? Does your jeepney fly, my boy, like a lobo, a balloon?

  3. A

Sorry, so they're in different directions. And the one to Ibaan, which way does that go?

  4. B

For Ibaan, the road is iba, different, so go to the other line. Are you a taal Batangueño, a true one, or just a tourist in Taal?

  5. A

Turista pa lang po, pero nag-aaral na. 'Yung sa Alitaptap po, malayo ba?

Just a tourist for now, but I'm learning. And Alitaptap, is that far?

  6. B

Alitagtag, my boy, not alitaptap, firefly! Follow a firefly and they'll be picking you up in the woods.

  7. A

Aling Fe, the whole terminal is laughing at me now. What does it take to be accepted here?

  8. B

Simple lamang: bumanat ka ng birong Batangueño. Kapag napatawa mo ako, may biyahe ka.

It's simple: hit me with a Batangueño joke. Make me laugh, and you've got a trip.

  9. A

Okay: even if I'm full of hot air, like a lobo, a balloon, I drive Mabini, gently, and my respect for you is Taal, the genuine article.

  10. B

Well, well, three towns in one sentence! All right, the first trip to Lobo is yours, just don't fly off.

  11. A

Thank you! I'll get the passengers there in one piece, nobody flying off, nothing popping.
