Day 53 of 135

Day 53: Slay, Like Santa's Sleigh?

In her kitchen in Boac, Marinduque, Lola Pining (A) asks her grandson Sam (B), a content creator visiting from Manila, what he wants her to say for his followers this time.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

So, Sam, what are you having me say this time? My rice has been on the stove for a while now.

  2. B

Here's the script, La: "Slay, babes, it's giving lola energy!"

  3. A

Ano ga ang slay? Iyong sinasakyan ni Santa Claus? E paragos lamang 'yan, kulang sa kalabaw.

What's a slay? That thing Santa Claus rides? Why, that's just a paragos, a farm sled, minus the carabao.

  4. B

No, La, "slay" means amazing. Please just read it.

  5. A

Then I'll do it my way: "My grandson really is amazing, like a fish vendor who's sold out before seven."

  6. B

Okay po, next: "She ate."

Okay, next: "She ate." It means she did a great job too.

  7. A

Your Ate ate? She ate ages ago. You're the one who hasn't had breakfast!

  8. B

La, it's not about Ate... Fine, just do whatever you like.

  9. A

My grandchildren in Manila, have you eaten? My sleigh is a paragos, and my reindeer is a carabao.

  10. B

La, you're even funnier than my script. Tomorrow, you're writing it.
