Day 58: Third Time Digging This Street
On their street in Parañaque, dug up for the third time this year, Gina (A), who runs a small bakery, stops to talk with her neighbor Carmen (B), an engineer at the city engineering office.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Hey, Carmen, aren't we lucky? Our street's been fixed three times this year. Is it election season already?
-
B
Different people did the digging, Gina. First the water company, then a telco laying fiber. We're the first ones doing drainage.
-
A
So that's why the street looks like a buffet, everyone helping themselves. Next, I guess, someone will be digging for gold.

B
Our old pipe is only sixty centimeters across. We're replacing it with a box culvert a meter and a half wide.
-
A
Wow, box culvert.
Wow, a box culvert. I hope it has room for my regulars, who haven't been able to get through for a month.
-
B
Just two more weeks. Do you know why the pipe right in front of your bakery is clogged?
-
A
Bakit, may tarpaulin ng kandidato sa loob?
Why, is there a candidate's tarpaulin stuck in it?
-
B
Wala. Tumigas na harina at mantika, halos isang sako. Ang suwerte mo, libreng declogging.
Nope. Hardened flour and grease, almost a whole sack. Lucky you, free declogging.
-
A
Harina?
Flour? You mean what my staff wash out every night...
-
B
Straight into the drain, so when it rains, the water has nowhere to go, and it overflows right in front of your place.
-
A
Okay, fine, I'll buy a grease trap. But if it still floods, it's your face I'm putting on a tarpaulin.
