How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

A
Good morning po, Mang Teddy! I-check ko lang po ang BP ninyo. Kumusta na po ang pain?
Good morning, Mang Teddy! Just going to check your BP. How's the pain?
-
B
My condition is most satisfactory, young man, though the ache has yet to depart. And it is not "i-check," but "suriin."
-
C
Teddy, nurse 'yan, hindi estudyante mo. Sorry, iho, ganyan talaga 'yan, apatnapung taong nagturo ng Filipino.
Teddy, he's a nurse, not your student. Sorry, young man, he's always like this. He taught Filipino for forty years.
-
A
It's all right, Ma'am. Okay, Mang Teddy, I shall now examine your... blood pressure.
-
B
Mahusay, iho! At ikaw, Delia, hindi "sorry," kundi "paumanhin."
Excellent, young man! And you, Delia, it is not "sorry," but "paumanhin."
-
C
Pardon me, my dear teacher, but last night you prayed three rosaries so you wouldn't need surgery.
-
A
Mang Teddy, Ma'am, the results are in. The doctor says the antibiotics weren't enough. You'll need surgery this afternoon.
-
B
Operasyon? Teka, iho, safe ba 'yon, at ilang araw bago ako makauwi?
Surgery? Wait, young man, is that safe, and how many days before I can go home?
-
A
It's safe, Mang Teddy, it's routine. If there are no complications, you'll only be here about three days.
-
C
O, Teddy, "safe" daw. At ikaw, nag-Ingles ka na rin pala.
There, Teddy, "safe," he says. And look at you, speaking English too.
-
B
When a man is scared, Delia, even his prayers turn Taglish. Hold my hand.
