Day 64 of 135

Day 64: Naming the Laundry Shop

In the empty space in Las Piñas that will open as their laundry shop next week, Rod (A), who is designing the sign, needs a name from his aunt Gemma (B) and his uncle Abner (C) before the printer closes.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Tita, Tito, the printer closes at six, I need a name for the tarpaulin now.

  2. B

'Yung seryoso, Rod: "G&A Laundry Services." Negosyo 'to, hindi comedy bar.

Something serious, Rod: "G&A Laundry Services." This is a business, not a comedy bar.

  3. C

Ang boring, Gemma, parang accounting firm! "Laba Story" na lang, o kaya "Labs Kita Laundry."

That's so boring, Gemma, it sounds like an accounting firm! How about "Laba Story," or "Labs Kita Laundry," as in "love ya"?

  4. A

"Laba Story" is cute, Tito, but it sounds like a rom-com. Look at Tita, she's already frowning.

  5. B

Kung kalokohan lang din: "Wash Upon a Time" at "Happily Ever Dryer." Laundry ba 'to o fairy tale?

If we're just going to be silly: "Wash Upon a Time" and "Happily Ever Dryer." Is this a laundry or a fairy tale?

  6. C

Uy, ang galing mo pala, Gemma! Pero may mas maganda pa: "Laba-dabba-doo!"

Hey, you're good at this, Gemma! But I've got a better one: "Laba-dabba-doo!"

  7. A

Tito, that's the Flintstones, it's older than I am. There's only half an hour left!

  8. B

What I want is a name that sounds clean, fresh and bright, one that won't look embarrassing on a receipt.

  9. C

Malinis, mabango, maaliwalas... "Bulaklak!" Bula, kasi sabon, at "klak," tunog ng luma nating washing machine.

Clean, fresh, bright... "Bulaklak," flower! Bula, for the soapsuds, and "klak," the sound our old washing machine makes.

  10. A

That explanation is so corny, but look: "Bulaklak Laundry." It looks serious, and the logo can be a flower made of bubbles!

  11. B

Bulaklak... it does look nice on a receipt. Oh, fine, you win, Abner, but don't you ever explain the "klak."
