Day 70: The Clerk Reviews the Judge
In her chambers at a Regional Trial Court in Bulacan, Judge Ruby (A), three weeks on the bench, asks Rose (B), clerk of court for twenty-five years, what she thinks of her first draft decision.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Ma'am Rose, have you read my draft in the estafa case? I'd like your honest opinion.
-
B
Opo, Judge.
Yes, Judge. It's excellent, and very long; the accused will surely be too tired to appeal.
-
A
Natawa po ako, pero parang may laman 'yon. Masyado po bang mahaba ang pitumpung pahina?
That made me laugh, but it sounded like there was something behind it. Are seventy pages too long?
-
B
Oh, no. The Supreme Court is also very fond of the People versus Sinukuan you quoted, that's why they reversed it.
-
A
Reversed? Do you mean the doctrine I relied on is no longer good law?
-
B
I'm not saying anything, Judge, you're the judge. There's just a sticky note on page 32.
-
A
Thank you. Is there anything else "excellent" I should know about?
-
B
There is: the dispositive portion is very clear, especially the part where the wrong side wins.
-
A
What? Good Lord, the names got switched in the fallo! I almost sent the complainant to jail.
-
B
It's only one line, Judge, and the promulgation isn't until Friday. It's still excellent.
-
A
Ma'am Rose, from now on, whenever you say "excellent," I'll reread everything.
