Day 73 of 135

Day 73: No Leading Questions in Lipa

In a barangay in Lipa, Batangas, Aira (A) and Renzo (B), young enumerators for a Manila survey firm, interview homeowner Arlene (C) about the coming mayoral race, with local volunteer Nina (D) as their guide.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

  1. A

Magandang umaga po, Ma'am Arlene. Kami po sina Aira at Renzo, mula sa isang survey firm.

Good morning, Ma'am Arlene. We're Aira and Renzo, from a survey firm.

  2. B

This will only take fifteen minutes, and all your answers are confidential.

  3. C

Who's behind these questions? Whose side are you on, the mayor's or the other guy's?

  4. D

Tita Arlene, they're not on anyone's side. Ate Aira, she's not angry, that's just how people talk here.

  5. A

Salamat, Nina.

Thanks, Nina. Ma'am, I'll read it exactly as written: "If the election were held today, whom would you vote for as mayor?"

  6. C

Ikaw, iho, may gusto kang sabihin?

And if I say Kapitan Dado, will that make you happy? You, iho, is there something you want to say?

  7. B

Oh, nothing. But just to be clear, is Kapitan Dado the one who had the road here paved?

  8. A

Renzo, leading 'yan.

Renzo, that's a leading question. I'm sorry, Ma'am, I'll just repeat the question, exactly as written.

  9. C

Well, then, you're good, iha, you didn't give in. Write this down: I don't know yet.

  10. D

Ate Aira, put down "undecided," she means it. Tita Arlene was just testing whether you're fair.

  11. B

Thank you, Ma'am, and sorry about my question. I've learned my lesson.

  12. C

Look at you, you've got it! Have some barako coffee here first, and tell Manila that people from Lipa are hard to read.
