Day 75: Double Debit on Payday
At two in the morning after payday, Gillian (A), the young engineer leading a Taguig digital bank's incident team, and Gerald (B) from corporate communications draft the public advisory on a glitch that charged thousands of customers twice.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Gerald, the duplicate debits have been rolled back, but we still need a root cause analysis before we report to the BSP.
-
B
Advisory muna.
The advisory first. We're trending, and people aren't asking about "rollback," they're asking "where's my money."
-
A
Nandiyan ang pera nila. Nag-time out ang gateway, nag-retry ang system nang walang idempotency key, kaya nadoble.
Their money's there. The gateway timed out, the system retried without an idempotency key, so the charges doubled.
-
B
Translate that into the language of my aunt who's on Facebook at this hour.
-
A
Sige: "Nagkaaberya ang aming sistema, kaya naulit ang ilang bayad."
Okay: "Our system ran into a problem, so some payments went through twice."
-
B
Ganda.
Nice. Then: "Your money is safe, and the extra deductions have been returned." Is that true for everyone?
-
A
Only ninety-eight percent so far. Some auto-debits for bills bounced, because the double charge emptied their balance.
-
B
That's what hurts more. We have to say we'll cover their late fees, or nobody will believe us.
-
A
I can't approve that, that's Ma'am Tess's call. Put it in, we'll flag it on the bridge call.
-
B
At ang ETA ng full fix? Huwag tayong mangako ng "within the day" kung hindi sigurado.
And the ETA on the full fix? Let's not promise "within the day" if we're not sure.
-
A
Naka-deploy na ang hotfix. Bigyan mo ako hanggang alas-diyes, at "initial findings" muna sa BSP.
The hotfix is deployed. Give me until ten, and the BSP gets "initial findings" for now.
-
B
Alas-diyes, initial findings.
Ten o'clock, initial findings. And at the end: "The bank will never ask for your OTP." The scammers will be up even earlier than we will.
