How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Tagalog. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio for this lesson is coming soon. For now, read the dialogue and its translation.

A
Mom, what's this "Agreement on the Care of the Grandchildren"? It even has whereas clauses?
-
B
"Whereas the First Party is a retired lawyer and not a nanny..." Read it in full before you sign.
-
A
Ma, nagbibiro po kayo, 'di po ba? Hindi man lang po kayo nakangiti.
Mom, you're joking, right? You're not even smiling.
-
B
A contract is no joke, dear. Pursuant to Section 3, picking up toys is not included in the service.
-
A
And Section 4? "One bilao of pancit for every hour the pickup is late"?
-
B
That's lenient, if anything. Last Saturday you were three hours late, so you owe three bilaos.
-
A
The Second Party objects. That was force majeure, Mom: the flood in Sucat, and I don't control the rain.
-
B
Objection sustained. But under Section 5, no tablets for the children in my house, no appeal.
-
A
In that case, the Second Party has an amendment: no candy before dinner, pursuant to the dentist's advice.
-
B
Tinatanggihan.
Denied. Candy is a grandmother's right, it's written in the Grandmothers' Constitution.
-
A
Mom, what's this Section 9: "The Second Party is obliged to take a nap every Saturday"?
-
B
That's the most important provision. The penalty for breach: one hug for your mother. Now sign.
